Intra-minority Stress

While sexual orientation disparities in many mental and physical health outcomes can be explained by minority stress, or the stigma-related stress experienced by socially disadvantaged groups, our team’s research has uncovered additional challenges that some sexual minorities face that are not necessarily due to stigma. For instance, some of our research shows that young gay and bisexual men who move to large cities encounter stressors in the way that urban life might differ from life in their hometowns. Some of our other work shows that sexual minority men sometimes identify norms, behaviors, and attitudes of the gay community itself as primary stressors in their lives.
